Wood-burning fireplace

Every villa has its own wood-burning fireplace — the heart of a winter night here.

Firewood is stacked in the wooden box on your verandah; kindling on the rack beside it.

Lighting it, step by step:

1. Open the damper (the lever above the door).
2. Lay two pieces of kindling at the back, scrunched newspaper in front.
3. One small log on top. Light the paper, close the door.
4. Five to ten minutes later, when it's roaring, add larger logs.

Settling in for the night: let the logs burn right down, then close the damper. Please don't go to bed with embers glowing inside the door open.

One firm rule: don't run the fire and the A/C at the same time. Pick one — they fight each other and burn through both wood and power.
